River Wye 3 - 4 Day Trip Any Takers???
Last Updated on June 28, 2003
we are planning a 3 -4 DAY TRIP on the river wye from hay-on-wye down towards monmouth...85 approx miles of beautiful river scenery. a real adventure!
gillie and i did a longer trip last year on the same river in our racing canoe, a total mileage of 96 miles but in only 2 days and it was fantastic...this year we are looking at doing a slower paced trip, open for anyone who is intrested approx 20 miles per day.
the plan is to leave hay-on-wye sometime in september (date tba) and take a slow lesuirely trip to monmouth. we recon on about 3 - 4 days depending on how fast we want to paddle and how the river is flowing.
we will camp out at night at river side camp sites, with maybe the odd nights wild camping as and when we feel like stopping.
we will take all food with us and some water the rest we can get from pubs on route...which is also a nice way to eat in the evening if we dont feel like cooking.
all our kit is stored in expedition barrels to keep it dry or in dry bags and placed in the canoes.
each person will be responsable for paddling their canoe, kit and food during the trip, hopefully we will share cooking.
the river is quiet and little paddled for most of the streach so the only people we may come across is other river trippers or the odd fisherman. we pass through some amazing scenery, abundent wildlife (on the last trip we counted 50 king fishers & 100's of herons) and a little white water now and then. the chance to sleep under the stars and enjoy peace and quiet away from your normal life!
you dont need to be an experienced paddler, just have a sence of adventure and a free spirit.
we will coach you on the strokes as we go and once at the other end you will have gained some excellent experince in boat handling, had some fun, enjoyed unspolit scenery and truly got away from it all.
cost per person - £120 - includes boat, safety equipment, instruction during the trip, transport to the start, cooking stoves, expedition barrels and drybags. (some other equipment can be hired / loaned on request i.e tent)
whats not included - food, sleeping bags, personal clothing ( we can provide water proof canoe jackets ). transport to the finish point where we will leave our cars to finish at, tents.
max number of places - 8 minimum needed to go ahead with the trip - 4
please email us if you are intrested in this mini expedition on the wye.
we will take it as first come first served, if the trip is over subscribed we will run another a few weeks later.
the trip is river level dependant, if it is in spate then we may have to pospone. september is a good month to be on the river and doesnt usualy flood!
