The beaches of South Wales don't usually spring to mind as a good place to surf, but it has a thriving surfing community and plenty of waves to go around.
We offer ½ to 1-day taster sessions and weekend surfaris for the total grom (beginner in surf speak). Using South Wales as our base we have 6 different breaks to choose from.
Porthcawl's Rest Bay is a favourite for day trips, with Swansea only 20 minutes drive further on for the weekend surfaris and well-known waves such as Llangennith and Caswell Bay. Rest bay is used primarily as it is a lifeguard patrolled beach - in fact our instructors hold lifeguard qualifications themselves - gently slopping with good surf suitable for the beginner and has a great café above the beach to restore your energy. Llangennith host the famous welsh longboard classic each year, with visiting competitors from around the world, has a great campsite behind the dunes and the village a 5-minute walk away.
The most addictive sport in the world...? The many who surf would say:
only a surfer knows the feeling...
We are sure it is a sport that you will enjoy too!
The seas around the Welsh coast are warmer than you think, especially inside a nice warm wetsuit. You must be able to swim at least 25 metres, and be confident with water splashing your face. We don't go above waist high water to start with although with a little experience we find you may want go further out to get the cleaner waves and catch that longer ride!
All equipment is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own wetsuit and board if you have one. Camping equipment and food is not provided for the surfaris, although 'Vera' the VW camper van usually comes along for that true surf experience of travelling from one beach to another in style!
This activity is weather dependent, unlike Hawaii or California we don't get surf everyday of the year! But we can choose from the many breaks to find the best surf, and if it is flat (no waves) then we can offer other activities instead or post pone your trip to another date.
We usually know the wave forecast a few days ahead of the date.
Taster sessions are normally held at Rest Bay, conditions depending! All equipment is provided and explained to you. Before hitting the water we will teach you on the beach how to get out through the waves, and how to catch and ride a wave. Then it is into the water to try it all out. Surfing has the longest learning curve of any of the sports we instruct, but with our tuition you will be standing up on your board in no time! Most people we teach are able to stand up within a few hours! Something that would take weeks if you hired a board and tried to teach yourself! A great number of our past pupils have gone on to take up the sport and can be found hunting for surf most weekends in summer!
